Conditions Explained > Circulatory Conditions > Hemorrhoids + Varicose Veins

Possible Causes

The causes of hemorrhoids, or piles as they are sometimes called, are well known and not particularly complicated.  When the valves that push blood along the veins stop working, blood begins to stagnate and the vein expands and twists.  In the anal region this problem is know as hemorrhoids.  Varicose veins most often occur in the legs.  They can primarily be attributed to one of two causes, a genetic weakness of the veins or excessive pressure.  Pressure may be caused by long periods of sitting or standing, constipation, too much straining while defecating, heavy lifting, pregnancy, obesity and any other factors that increase pressure in the rectal area.

Signs and Symptoms

Typical signs of hemorrhoids are burning, pain or discomfort from pressure, swelling and bleeding (most commonly seen in stool or toilet bowl).  Itching associated with hemorrhoids is most common with internal hemorrhoids.

Treatments for Hemorrhoids

The natural therapy approaches to this condition can include hydrotherapy and topical treatments for temporary relief.  Botanical treatments can be used for long-term effects.  Hydrotherapy for hemorrhoids consists of warm sitz baths.  In a sitz bath the pelvic area is immersed in a bath or tub up to the navel for 3 minutes.  Then immerse the pelvic area in a cool bath for 1 minute.  Repeat for 3 cycles ending in cool water.    This tonifies the tissue as well as helps with pain relief.  Supplements of vitamins C and E and zinc will help prevent varicose veins forming.

The use of botanicals in the treatment of hemorrhoids is primarily for the purpose of strengthening the veins and encouraging tissue healing.  Aloe vera and marshmallow root are used externally to help with tissue healing.  Calendula ointment is used topically for itching.  Witch hazel extract is used for soreness and to tonify the veins.  Extracts of Butcher’s broom, horse chestnut and gotu kola can all be effective.   You should consult your natural medicine practitioner about doses and proper use of these.  Bromelain taken three times each day at 500 -700 mg is also effective for strengthening veins.

Prevention and Self-care

Prevention is the most important aspect of controlling hemorrhoids.  Avoid getting constipated by eating a diet rich in fibrous foods and drinking plenty of water daily.  For someone who is overweight, losing weight can decrease the pressure in the abdomen and pelvis.  Adopt good bowel habits by not sitting on the toilet too long; avoid straining while having a bowel movement and use soap and water to gently cleanse the anus after a bowel movement.  If sitting for long periods of time, schedule breaks to get up and move around.

The daily diet of a person suffering from hemorrhoids should also include healthy doses of flavenoid rich foods like cherries, blackberries and blueberries to strengthen capillary walls or take a bilberry supplement or tincture every day.  Also eat one clove of raw garlic or a garlic capsule every day. To encourage circulation through your veins take a combination of gotu cola, yarrow, limeflower and hawthorn as teas or standard dose tinctures, three times a day.

Hydrotherapy

A therapist may suggest applying a cold compress of rose water to the designated area to ease discomfot. A warm sitz bath may also help.

Naturopathy

To soothe inflammation, you may be given a combination of zinc oxide, vitamin E and alow vera gel or olive oil in a diet aimed to cleanse and stimulate the system, which will be devised by your therapist.

Western Herbal Medicine

Herbal creams, containing natural ingredients, can provide an excellent alternative to chemically based creams found in most general stores. Creams containing witch hazel, horse chestnut, or aloe can resolve in smooth relievement. Papaya juice is also believed to be a suitable remedy.
